College East
College East is nestled right in the heart of the main building of Fettes College. We reside in the east end of what was once School House. As one of the smaller boarding houses, we have a very tight knit group of girls. We are full to capacity with 49 girls aged 13-17.
The house is regarded as a warm, friendly and happy environment. The East girls display a wide variety of talents and interests. East girls are active in many areas of the school, including sports, music, the Fettes College Pipes and Drums, art, and their academics.
In the 2006-2007 school year, the Head Girl was from College East; Nayela was also the first girl to serve as Pipe Major and lead the Fettes College Pipes and Drums. Other outstanding performances include Eun Joo Yoon winning the Instrumental Competition as well as the Piano Competition in which she was closely followed by our own Joanna Yiu!
East is also active on the sports pitch. Camilla Thurlow captained the successful First XI Hockey Team, as well as Athletics and Lacrosse – for which she will represent Scotland during the summer. Alicia Lawson won a Gold and Silver medal in the Scottish Schools competition. The house came together to win the closely fought senior House Hockey competition. We are the current champions of both the junior and senior House Badminton competitions and the junior girls were victorious in the House Netball.
With so many opportunities, you will find East girls in every aspect of the school from the First Lacrosse Team to helping children in the community with disabilities as well as always bringing home academic awards. Our girls are motivated and quick to help each other. They bring enthusiasm to their academic pursuits and all they attempt. Above all they bring warmth, kindness, and a willingness to enjoy sharing the good times and to support each other through the challenges they face.
While we work diligently, we also feel it is important to balance our lives. This year, the Fourth Form prepared and ran a fun and spooky Halloween party, with our own Housemistress appearing as the Wicked Witch of the East! We have several house and year group outings, for which the house prefects take a year group into Edinburgh for a meal or the cinema.
Not only do the girls in the house enjoy each other‘s company, but they also benefit from the guidance of a dedicated and hard working group of tutors. The Housemistress of College East, since 2004, Mrs. Pam Houston comes from Dundee, where she trained as a teacher. After qualifying she moved with her husband to England, returning to Scotland in 1988 to work at Rannoch School in the Highlands. Here she was Head of Learning Support, Housemistress of the senior girls‘ boarding house, and Child Protection Officer. Mrs. Houston came to Fettes in 2002 to work as the Housemistress of the Prep School girls‘ boarding house, Iona. She has a son, Craig, and a daughter, Caroline, and enjoys spending time with her family. Her interests include tapestry, cross-stitch and bridge, and she throws a great birthday party for each of the boarding girls. Please feel free to contact the Housemistress at p.houston@fettes.com for any further inquiries.
