Science
At Fettes College Preparatory School our Science Department aims to deliver a coherent and progressive science course which enables pupils to acquire a thorough knowledge and understanding of scientific concepts which affect our everyday lives and the world around them. We strive to awaken and encourage each pupils enthusiasm for and interest in science whilst developing informed attitudes about their environment.

From M Form upwards pupils follow a comprehensive science course using first the “Stanley Thornes Primary Science” course for forms M, P and S then moving on to the “Oxford University Press – Starting Science” texts. The majority of the science lessons are taught in a dedicated science laboratory housed within the Senior School Science Department. Most lessons are taught by dedicated science teachers, rather than general class teachers, who have a more specialist knowledge of the subject to enhance learning.
A hands on approach to learning is encourage as much as possible with experimental work forming a key part of pupils learning. In the 2nd Form pupils sit a practical examination of their experimental techniques as part of their final end of year assessment.
Pupils are encouraged to take pride in their work and to develop their interests in the subject through class discussion and individual investigation. School trips to venues such as the Glasgow Science Centre and Deep Sea World help to enhance and encourage wider learning and put class based activities into context.
