Maths
Undoubtedly Maths is always going to be at the forefront of academic attentions. However, we also recognise that ultimately it is an essential life skill beyond the realms of classroom or examination hall. Within our maths curriculum our aim is to balance these aspects. We offer authentic and realistic Mathematical situations alongside more formal structures.
An ‘open book’ policy encourages the children to seek advice from any of the Maths staff at any time of doubt or uncertainty of understanding. Close Liaison with the Support for Learning department is ongoing at all times.
Due regard is paid to the Curriculum and Guidelines nationally allowing us to mould our own course according to its structure and embrace all ability levels… fundamental skills being Number, Money and Measurement, Shape, Shape, Position and Movement, Information Handling and Problem Solving. Of course, the aim is to affect a smooth and successful progressive transition to the Mathematics expected in Senior School.
Practical maths for dexterity of method and strategies and mental agility are seen as critical components allied to other ‘traditional’ skills, such as tables and algebra. ICT components are integrated as and when necessary and appropriate.
Texts in the upper part of school include the Scottish Heinemann Maths and Essential Maths which follow on from the Heinemann Scheme and Target Maths series. They offer a broad spectrum to our exercises and assignments and can then be supplemented with worldwide materials courtesy of the internet and ICT facilities.
All teachers bring to the classroom other skills, influences and experiences besides their years of Mathematical expertise.
