A geographical education influences and reflects the values of society, and the kind of society we want to be. The Geography department at Fettes College Preparatory School regards that a rounded geographical education be the route to equality of opportunity for all, a healthy and just democracy, a productive economy, and sustainable development.

GEOGRAPHY 1.pngAs a department we seek to illustrate the place not only of the individual but also the world’s citizens with regard to economic, social and cultural change, with particular regard to continued globalisation of the economy and society, changing work and leisure patterns and the rapid expansion of communication technologies.

The geography curriculum aims to contribute to the development of pupils’ sense of identity through knowledge and understanding of the spiritual, moral, social and cultural heritages of Britain’s diverse society and of the local, national, European, Commonwealth and global dimensions of their lives.
We seek to develop enjoyment of, and commitment to, learning as a means of encouraging and stimulating the best possible progress and the highest attainment for all pupils. Further to this we aim to build on pupils’ strengths, interests and experiences and develop their confidence in their capacity to learn and work independently and collaboratively.
We actively provide opportunity for pupils to become creative, innovative and enterprising individuals who are capable of leadership in their future lives as workers and citizens. The geography curriculum aims to promote pupils’ spiritual, moral, social and cultural development and prepare them for the opportunities, responsibilities and challenges of life.
Further to this, work to develop pupils’ awareness and understanding of, and respect for the environments, in which they live, and secure their commitment to sustainable development at a personal, local, national and global level.
