Third Form
History in the Third Form is about studying key events that shaped the Twentieth Century as well as developing the necessary written and thinking skills to succeed further up the College. In the Christmas Term we look at the First World War. In the past students have been given the opportunity to visit the Battlefields of the First World War and walk the Somme for themselves. Activities during the term include project work on the trenches and evaluation of government propaganda on the Home Front. In the Spring Term we cover the Holocaust. Students look at the historical context of anti semitism and develop an understanding of prejudice and discrimination before embarking upon a detailed study of the Final Solution. In 2007 the Fourth and Fifth Forms will visit Auschwitz, an experience that cold only happen with the grounding they received in the Third Form. Students also evaluate films such as Life is Beautiful in the context as historical sources as well as examining a range of other relevant, accessible and interesting material. In the Summer Term, there is the chance to look at the key turning points of World War Two including the Battle of Britain, Pearl Harbour, Stalingrad and the dropping of the A Bomb. In 2007 the Third Form were priveleged to hear a fomer Battle of Britain pilot address them in the Upper. Wallace Cunningham DFC was hugely impressed with their knowledge of events and searching questions.
