Mrs Rachel Nicol is Head of Department and is currently away from school on maternity leave. She studied Geography at St. John‘s University, York. Her interests lie in both Human and Physical Geography and the interactions between the two disciplines. She has recently returned from living in New Zealand and has led field trips and expeditions to Kenya, Iceland and Europe.
Mrs Yvonne Mitchell is Acting Head of Department and studied Geography at Durham University. At university she focussed on Human Geography, however, since travelling extensively through South America and Asia she has gained a new found respect for the physical forces at work in forming present landscapes. She is passionate about travelling and has visited many countries around the world, most recently China and Namibia.
Mr Barry Welsh is a former Head of Department and now Housemaster of Moredun. He studied at Loughborough University and his main interests are in Human and Social Geography. He has led expeditions to Iceland, Jordan and Nepal as well as an overland expedition driving from London to Australia. He is a keen traveller and mountaineer, with ascents of Alpamayo and Huascaran in Peru in 2004 and Mount Everest in 2006.
Dr. Adrian Hall studied Geography at St. Andrews. His interests lie mainly in geomorphology and he has written extensively on the landscape of Scotland. He has led field trips and expeditions to Ecuador, Iceland, Norway and Siberia. He is Head of ICT and also Co-ordinator of American Relations at Fettes. He has developed web sites on the Cairngorms and Shetland.
Mrs Helen Harrison studied Geography at Cambridge University and is the Deputy Head of the school. She is a specialist in Human Geography and has led fieldtrips to several destinations including Morocco.
Miss Jenny Reid joined the department in April 2008 covering for Mrs Nicol's maternity leave. She studied at Queen's University of Belfast and has recently returned to Edinburgh having taught in England for the last few years. She has led Geography trips to Iceland and is involved with the school's CCF.
